Am I a Candidate?
For those who are obese, losing weight through diet and exercise alone is often very difficult. That’s because obesity is a disease, and your body actually fights against weight loss, believing that it’s helping you survive. For this reason, bariatric surgery is the best way for many people to ensure long-term weight loss that also improves or resolves many of the medical conditions associated with obesity.
If you are not sure if you are obese, visit our BMI page to calculate your Body Mass Index. This will give you an idea if you might be a good candidate for weight loss surgery. However, Dr. Lutfi can only determine if you are a candidate through a medical examination, thorough review of your history, and consultation.
In your consultation, he will spend as much time with you as necessary to evaluate whether or not bariatric surgery is advisable and safe for you. He will then discuss the available methods with you and make a suggestion as to which procedure would be best. The final decision, of course, is always yours.
BMI Range
As a general rule, certain techniques work best for people at a particular BMI range. For example, those with a minimum BMI of 30 might be good candidates for the intragastric balloon method, while any other bariatric surgery requires a minimum BMI of 35. Those with a BMI over 40 might have a better result with laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy or laparoscopic gastric bypass. Again, however, it depends on the individual.
At the Institute, we treat the whole patient and provide a comprehensive obesity & bariatric program that helps you prepare for your surgery and maintain your weight loss through ongoing guidance and support. Every program and surgical procedure is customized for the individual, and we are dedicated to your success. If you have had an unsatisfactory bariatric surgery result or have begun to regain weight a year or more after your initial surgery, you may be a candidate for revision bariatric surgery.
